Abstract

Introduction. Migration is associated with migrants’ mental health status. Although Haitian migrants represent the 12.2% of the international migrants living Chile, there are few studies that assess their mental health and there are limited psychometric instruments. Objective. To translate, validate, and adapt the Spanish version of the Depression Scale of the Center for Epidemiological Studies (CESD-R-20) into Kreyol (Haitian Creole). Methods. Based on a cross-sectional two-stage cluster sampling with 210 Haitian migrants living in Santiago de Chile, we conducted translation and back translation of the CESD-R-20 Scale from Spanish to Kreyol, additionally, we reached an adapted version in Spanish. In total, 132 participants answered the survey in Kreyol and 78 in Spanish. Results. Cronbach's Alpha is 0.92. The confirmatory analysis gave as a result that the mean square root of the residuals is 0.09, a Chi square of 401 and a p-value < 1.1e-20. These results indicate that a single component is sufficient to analyze the Kreyol version of the CESD-R-20 scale. Discussion and conclusion. The translation and adaptation of the CESD-R-20 instrument in Spanish to Kreyol is pertinent, valid, and can be used in future studies to evaluate symptoms of depression in the Haitian migrant population in Spanish-speaking countries.
