Abstract
Although there are several advances in the understanding of the effects of divorce on the well-being and development of adolescents, one aspect that requires further exploration is whether there are variations in well-being and the quality of attachment ties among adolescents who have experienced or not the separation of their parents. The objective of this study was to evaluate differences in the levels of life satisfaction, the quality of attachment to the mother and father between adolescents from intact families and those who have experienced the separation of their parents. Through a cross-sectional study, a sample of 421 Chilean adolescents between 12 and 17 years of age was evaluated, 54.6% being children of married parents and 45.4% children of divorced parents. The mean difference analyzes using t tests carried out allowed to identify that life satisfaction is higher in the children of intact families. Likewise, differences were detected in the quality of attachment towards the father, but not towards the mother. Specifically, adolescents from divorced parents reported lower quality of communication, lower mutual trust, and greater alienation from their parents than children from intact families. These results, discussed from a clinical perspective, advance in the understanding of the effects of divorce in Chilean adolescents.
