Abstract
Adolescent suicide has been widely studied, yet there is a shortage of qualitative research focusing on social representations and parents’ perspectives. This study aimed to characterize Chilean parents’ social representations of adolescent suicide using a grounded theory-style approach. The sample comprised 12 mothers and fathers from Concepción, selected via theoretical sampling, who had not experienced suicide closely. Through open coding, 27 categories emerged, illustrating these parents’ beliefs and attitudes regarding adolescent suicide. Drawing on these categories, the authors proposed a comprehensive model that partially aligns with existing theoretical frameworks, while also revealing prevalent myths about suicide. Such misconceptions should be addressed in healthcare centers and educational institutions to help parents detect warning signs, strengthen communication, and ultimately prevent adolescent suicide. These findings highlight the need for further qualitative inquiry that explores how cultural, familial, and social dynamics shape parental understandings of suicidal behavior in adolescents.
